It’s been almost 2 years now that I’ve been watching StarCraft (1 & 2) commentaries, and in that time I’ve watched a lot of different commentators. The first time I watched Nuke was for the 2009 Batoo OSL finals where the established and just about legendary Jaedong went up against the relatively new Fantasy. The games themselves were interesting and the commentary was just as enjoyable, and it wasn’t long before Nuke became my favorite (Klazart was a close second while he was around).
When I think about what I enjoy so much about the commentaries, I think it may be the general impression that he really enjoys watching the games. I do like how Diggity keeps his casts relatively hype-free. I like Husky’s love for Blizzard and the hard work he does for the StarCraft fan base. I can even give a lot of kudos to Day9 for putting in the extra work to help people have fun playing themselves. But there’s something about a person truly enjoying something they do well that makes it really entertaining to me.
It’s probably no coincidence either that I have more of an admiration for the pros still kicking it around in Brood War. The “gg no re” from Idra are amusing as are TLO’s antics, but the way Nuke reveres the Brood War pros, with the voices and nick names makes them much more fun to follow. And it probably doesn’t hurt that there are true masters of the Brood War craft (in contrast, I would argue, to SC2).
Anyway, he doesn’t post casts very often now that the Brood War scene is giving way to SC2, but the “Nuke at Night” narratives he posts are also entertaining to me. This one makes me want to get a tarantula, though I think the kitties’ meowing would be incessant if I did that XD
