When I first started on Reddit I just used the front page, and it was filled with things like what you find on 9gag. It was cool to kill time, and I was gradually introduced to nuanced forms of trolling (link bait, etc.). I kept going back, however, because a) all the funny stuff people post anywhere almost always showed up there and b) the comments usually provide interesting viewpoints.
Eventually I decided that I didn’t care about a) so much, so I created an account and customized my front page to get rid of things like r/pics, and added things like r/programming and r/music. Eventually I came across a link to some of Josie Charlwood’s stuff and really enjoyed it. Usually when a youtube video gets popular on Reddit you’ll see a bunch of comments like “hi from reddit!” This time I saw more about 9gag, which I hadn’t heard of before. I think I checked it out quickly, thought “oh it’s like a r/pics feed.”
A week or so ago I finally went back to look; I don’t even remember why anymore. I guess this time I decided that a r/pics feed isn’t such a bad thing. There are probably fewer reposts, and the front page is always filled with new stuff, not the same junk that I looked at earlier in the day (props to the redditors who put up with that, and the knights of new etc.).
Anyway there are a few I see occasionally that just make me genuinely laugh and smile, and this is the latest such one.
